Mitsubishi SJ-11AW52M Fails After A Speed Change - We Didn't Just Repair It.

A CNC tool manufacturer had one of their major machines in the production line come to a standstill due to the seizure of its spindle motor. A change in conditions can affect your motor performance. Having a repair company that understands your business makes a difference to your short and long term maintenance plan. 


The production manager of the company then decided to call NDC as he had used our services before and was happy with the services provided. NDC ServoLab had the spindle motor collected from site within an hour of receiving the call. On arrival at the ServoLab Facility, the motor was dismantled right away and the front bearing of the motor was found to be seized and the reason of the failure of the motor. On examination of the bearing, our experienced engineers were convinced that the bearing had not failed due to normal wear and tear but due to exertion of an unusual load on the bearing. The production manager was then contacted as ServoLab needed to investigate the scenario a bit more than only repairing the motor as the engineers were convinced that the motor would fail again if precautions weren’t taken. After speaking to the production manager, we were informed that in the last few months, this machine was running at a higher speed as the raw material used in the tool manufacturing had been changed. After this information was passed on to the engineers at our ServoLab facility all the necessary research was done and it was decided that the type of bearings would need changing and also the bearing housing would need modification to suit the preload on the bearings. This information was put forward to the production manager and with his approval, work was started on the motor. All parts of the motor were tested extensively and the motor was assembled as per OEM standards using the new type of bearings. After extensively testing of the motor while subjected to a load similar to the load that the motor would be subjected while in production, the motor was then dispatched and sent to the tool manufacturer where the motor was reinstalled on the machine. On reinstallation of the motor, the engineers on site adjusted the tension of the spindle as per the instructions provided by ServoLab engineers as the new type of bearings would need the adjustment to prevent damage to the motor in the future.

 

Hence we don’t only repair motors but we also help in prevention of future failure. That’s the difference between only seeing the small picture, and seeing the big picture, helping our customer with preventive maintenance, and short and long term performance.
