Machine shop taps NDC expertise to secure production deadline

MAG Giddings & Lewis

(March 2011)

One of NDC customers in the machine tool sector is a large volume supplier of machined parts to the Oil, Gas and Pumping industries, operating large MAG Giddings & Lewis Horizontal Boring Mills.

NDC Scotland were recently inivited to assess problems with the multi axis controls on these machines before a critical delivery date slipped.

After running diagnostics ahead of the weekend it was established that the Servomotors were operating normally, but that two of the Servo Drives were not performing to specification. These drives were Allen Bradley type 1391-AA45 and are now obsolete.

Initially, due to the production pressures involved, a new alternative was sought from the OEM, however with both a delivery time of 6-12 weeks and the cost of a new unit being prohibitive, NDC were given the green light to resolve the situation and get the customer back up and running.

The Servo Drives were issued to our test facility, where the faults were diagnosed, all repairs effected and the units subject to full function testing before being despatched back to site by the following Monday morning.

Our customers' onsite engineering team re-fitted the units and had the machine tools producing at full capacity by lunchtime - to fulfil the production order on time.

Another example of why a growing number of end-users in the machining industry trust us - because we go that extra mile.
